The Red Gold rose

Posted on November 24, 2023

The Red Gold rose is a bicolor hybrid tea rose known for its captivating blend of deep orange-red and golden yellow blooms, exuding a strong, fruity fragrance. Introduced in France by NIRP International in 1967, this exquisite rose embodies the vibrancy of a fiery sunset, adding a touch of warmth and elegance to any garden.

Characteristics of the Red Gold Rose:

  • Bloom Size: 4-5 inches in diameter
  • Color: Deep orange-red with golden yellow edges
  • Fragrance: Strong, fruity fragrance with hints of citrus and spice
  • Height: 4-5 feet
  • Width: 3-4 feet
  • Hardiness Zone: 6-11
  • Bloom Time: Late spring to early fall
  • Disease Resistance: Good resistance to black spot and powdery mildew

Care and Cultivation:

  • Sun Exposure: Prefers full sun to partial shade for at least 6-8 hours daily to encourage abundant blooms and healthy growth.
  • Soil Type: Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic pH of 6.0 to 6.5. Amend the soil with organic matter like compost or aged manure to improve drainage and nutrient content.
  • Watering: Water regularly, especially during hot, dry periods. Provide deep and infrequent watering to encourage deep root development. Aim for 1-2 inches of water per week during dry spells.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced rose fertilizer.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, diseased, or damaged canes, and maintain a desired shape. Also, prune to control the height and width of the plant.
  • Pest and Disease Control: Monitor for common rose pests like aphids, spider mites, and Japanese beetles. Use organic or least-toxic control methods whenever possible. Protect against fungal diseases like black spot and mildew by improving air circulation and avoiding overhead watering.

Additional Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms to promote continuous flowering and prevent the plant from expending energy on seed production.
  • Mulch around the base of the rose to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots during winter.

With proper care and attention, you can cultivate a thriving Red Gold rose that will grace your garden with its captivating bicolor blooms and enchanting fragrance for many years to come.
