Summer Love roses that will grace your garden

Posted on November 23, 2023

The Summer Love rose is a hybrid tea rose known for its soft, luminous yellow blooms and gentle fragrance. It was introduced in the United States in 2009 by Weeks Wholesale Rose Grower, Inc., and has since gained admiration for its captivating beauty and ease of care.

Characteristics of the Summer Love Rose:

  • Bloom Size: 5-6 inches in diameter
  • Color: Soft, luminous yellow with occasional touches of pink
  • Fragrance: Mild, sweet fragrance
  • Height: 43-4¼ feet
  • Width: Medium to medium-tall
  • Hardiness Zone: 5-9
  • Bloom Time: Late spring to early fall
  • Disease Resistance: Good resistance to black spot and powdery mildew

Care and Cultivation:

  • Sun Exposure: Thrives in full sun for at least 6-8 hours daily to encourage abundant blooms and healthy growth. However, it can also tolerate partial shade.
  • Soil Type: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic pH of 6.0 to 6.5. Amend the soil with organic matter like compost or aged manure to improve drainage and nutrient content.
  • Watering: Water regularly, especially during hot, dry periods. Provide deep and infrequent watering to encourage deep root development. Aim for 1-2 inches of water per week during dry spells.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced rose fertilizer.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, diseased, or damaged canes, and maintain a desired shape. Also, prune to control the height and width of the plant.
  • Pest and Disease Control: Monitor for common rose pests like aphids, spider mites, and Japanese beetles. Use organic or least-toxic control methods whenever possible. Protect against fungal diseases like black spot and mildew by improving air circulation and avoiding overhead watering.

Additional Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms to promote continuous flowering and prevent the plant from expending energy on seed production.
  • Mulch around the base of the rose to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots during winter.

With proper care and attention, you can successfully grow and maintain healthy, vibrant Summer Love roses that will grace your garden with their stunning yellow blooms and gentle fragrance for many years to come.
