Tips to keep roses fresh that you should know

Posted on January 15, 2024

Keeping roses fresh involves a combination of proper care before and after cutting. Here are essential tips to ensure your roses stay vibrant and beautiful for as long as possible:

1. Choose the Right Time to Cut:

  • Early Morning or Late Afternoon: Cut roses during the cooler parts of the day. Early morning or late afternoon is ideal, as the flowers are more hydrated and less stressed.

2. Use Clean Tools:

  • Sharp Pruners or Shears: Use sharp and clean pruners or shears to make a clean cut. Dull blades can crush the stems, hindering water absorption.

3. Cut at the Right Angle:

  • 45-Degree Angle: Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle. This provides a larger surface area for water absorption.

4. Remove Excess Foliage:

  • Submerged Leaves: Remove any foliage that will be submerged in water. Leaves in water promote bacterial growth and can reduce the vase life of the roses.

5. Hydrate Immediately:

  • Water Vase First: Before placing the roses in a vase, fill it with fresh water. Hydrating the roses immediately helps prevent air bubbles from entering the stems.

6. Use Flower Preservative:

  • Commercial Preservatives or Homemade Mix: Add a flower preservative to the water. These solutions contain nutrients and bactericides that prolong the life of cut flowers. If unavailable, you can make a homemade mixture with sugar, lemon juice, and a few drops of bleach.

7. Change Water Regularly:

  • Every 2-3 Days: Change the water in the vase every 2-3 days. Fresh water helps prevent the growth of bacteria that can clog the stems.

8. Recut Stems:

  • Every Few Days: Recut the stems at a 45-degree angle every few days. This ensures the roses continue to take up water efficiently.

9. Keep Roses Cool:

  • Avoid Heat Sources: Keep the vase away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and appliances. Cool temperatures help slow down the aging process.

10. Maintain Proper Water Level:

  • Submerged Stems: Ensure that the stems remain submerged in water. This prevents air from entering the stems and obstructing water uptake.

11. Display in a Clean Environment:

  • Avoid Drafts and Ripening Fruit: Keep roses away from drafts, as they can dehydrate the flowers. Additionally, avoid displaying them near ripening fruit, as the ethylene gas emitted can expedite wilting.

12. Preserve with Hairspray:

  • Optional: For a temporary fix, you can spray a light mist of hairspray on the flowers to help preserve their freshness.

13. Consider Flower Refrigeration:

  • Optional for Special Occasions: If you have a large event or special occasion, consider refrigerating your roses in a cool room or a flower refrigerator overnight to extend their freshness.

By following these tips, you can maximize the vase life of your roses and enjoy their beauty for an extended period.
